Background: a fragment from the woodblock print "Hina Matsuri" by Utagawa
Kunisada, circa 1847. The doll festival Hina Matsuri (also called Girls' Day) is
celebrated in Japan each year on March 3, and includes displays of hina-ningyo
(ornamental dolls) representing the Emperor, Empress, attendants, and
musicians in traditional court dress of the Heian period.
